Desalination plants have been made to combat this problem, which convert seawater into drinkable water by removing its salt content and other impurities. Currently, South Australia has three desalination plants dedicated to converting seawater, however there are still many issues that arise from this process. For instance, it consumes an excess amount of energy, releasing carbon dioxide emissions and leading to climate change. Furthermore, the brine waste that comes from these desalination plants, which have a very high concentration of sodium, are disposed back into the aquatic environment, severely harming marine animals.
