Curriculum and Pedagogy Reform
• Shift from rote learning to understanding and critical thinking.
• Focus on literacy and numeracy in early years — the foundation of all learning.
• Curriculum to be reduced in content and made more flexible.
• Promotion of experiential learning, art integration, and multilingualism.
Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)
• Creation of School Quality Assessment and Accreditation Framework (SQAAF).
• Separation of policy-making, regulation, operations, and academic standards.
Assessment Reforms
• Move away from high-stakes examinations.
• 360° Holistic Progress Card assessing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains.
• Board exams to test core competencies rather than rote memory; can be taken twice a year.
Equitable and Inclusive Education
• Special focus on Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs).
• Gender Inclusion Fund and special education zones.
• Inclusive education for children with disabilities.
Teacher Education and Training
• By 2030, the minimum qualification for teaching will be a 4-year integrated B.Ed. degree.
• Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for teachers.
• Emphasis on teacher autonomy and merit-based appointments.
Use of Technology
• Integration of digital learning tools, online education, and virtual labs.
• Establishment of National Educational Technology Forum (NETF).
• Promotion of digital literacy for teachers and students.
Vocational Education
• Introduction of vocational training from Grade 6 onwards.
• Internship opportunities with local industry and craftspeople.
• Aim: 50% of learners exposed to vocational education by 2025.
New Structure: 5+3+3+4 Model
o Secondary Stage (4 years): Grades 9–12 (ages 14–18)
o Middle Stage (3 years): Grades 6–8 (ages 11–14)
o Preparatory Stage (3 years): Grades 3–5 (ages 8–11)
o Foundational Stage (5 years): 3 years of preschool + Grades 1–2 (ages 3–8)
Goals of NEP 2020 for School Education
• Universalization of education from preschool to secondary level by 2030.
• 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in school education by 2030.
• Ensure foundational literacy and numeracy in all children by Grade 3.
• Create a system that prepares learners for global citizenship while rooted in Indian values and culture.
Regulatory Changes
• Creation of School Quality Assessment and Accreditation Framework (SQAAF).
• Separation of policy-making, regulation, operations, and academic standards.
Holistic Development and Flexibility
• Focus on life skills, ethics, emotional well-being, and 21st-century skills (critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration).
• No rigid separation between arts, science, or commerce.
Multilingualism and Language Policy
• Mother tongue or regional language to be the medium of instruction up to Grade 5 (preferably till Grade 8).
• Sanskrit and other classical languages to be offered as options.
