      - “His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead” (Joyce 32)
      - Mortality, stillness, falling–perhaps the many falling to inevitable death
  - - - “An “Image” is that which presents an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time” (Pound 200)
        
        Imagery as an experience of time, that should not be generalized.
        
        “Don’t use such an expression as ‘dim lands of peace.’ It dulls the image.” (Pound 200)
        
        Concrete over abstract–the word peace is generalises the image
        
        “Use either no ornament or good ornament” (Pound 202) + “No superfluous word, no adjective which does not reveal something,” (Pound 201)
        
        Every choice of imagery should be placed with purpose
    - - “The poet's mind is in fact a receptacle for seizing and storing up numberless feelings, phrases, images, which remain there until all the particles which can unite to form a new compound are present together” (Eliot 2174)
        
        Poets experience these “particles” of experience which build and build until the poet (or writer) can successfully brew them into a new poem or piece

      - The sea rose represents someone who has gone through trials (the sea)

        “Saffron from the fringe of the earth / wild saffron that has bent / over the sharp edge of earth, ” (III line 1-3)
        
        Saffron’s yellow petals echo the imagery of the bright light Eurydice sees when Orpheus looks back at her and is cursed, and the saffron bends over the edge of the earth, as she did looking down after him

        “While the imagination strains / after deer / going by fields of golden rod in / the stifling heat of September, / Somehow / it seems to destroy us, “ (line 55-58)
        
        The bulk of the poem focuses on social hopelessness, but offers a touch of hope through nature, via deer and goldenrod, a delicate yellow flower, as innocence and freedom. September’s heat however, comes in to destroy what hope there is, as the social hopelessness oppresses Elsie
        
        The Red Wheelbarrow
        
        “So much depends / upon / a red wheel / barrow” (lines 1-4)
        
        A simple load bearing tool, familiar to a rural audience, represents the working class, the color associates with ‘red necks’, which was originally a reference to miners and laborers, who wore red bandanas around their necks. They work hard, and so much of how society runs depends upon that class
      - Spring and All
        
        “The stiff curl of wildcarrot leaf / One by one objects are defined– / It quickens: clarity, outline of leaf,” (line 21-23)
        
        Wildcarrot uncurling in the spring (as the poem is titled) suggests new birth, and as the shapes become clearer, the sun rises on a new day
      - That is Just to Say
        
        “I have eaten / the plums / that were in the Icebox / and which / you were probably / saving / for breakfast” (line 1-8)
        
        Plums here represents desire, perhaps the representation of saving the plums for breakfast is that suggests stolen virginity or assault
  - - - The Lake Isle of Innisfree
        
        “And live along in the bee-loud glade” (line 4)
        
        The sound of buzzing bees represents a simple, hard work, and a replacement of countryside peace for the hustle and bustle of a busier city led life
      - Easter, 1916
        
        “And rode our winged horse;” (line 25
        
        Their winged horse is the revolution taking on a life of its own, to the point where it’s gaining a sentience of its own
      - The Rose Tree
        
        “There’s nothing but our own red blood / Can make a right Rose Tree,” (line 17-18)
        
        The Rose tree, just like the winged horse, represents the revolt, and the red blood is the blood shed by the supporters who die for the cause
      - Sailing to Byzantium
        
        “Fish, Flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long / Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.” (I line 5-6)
        
        The fish flesh and fowl represent life and vitality, but are immediatly comared to the birth and death, representing the inevitability of decay
      - Leda and the Swan
        
        “A sudden blow: the great wings beating still / Above the staggering girl, her thighs caressed, / By the dark webs, her nape caught in his bill, He holds her helpless breast upon his breast” (line 1-4)
        
        This clearly depicts the scene from Greek mythology where Zeus “seduces” Leda, though in the poem it appears depicted as rape. The imagery recalls the harsh change to modernism, as the rape of innocence or of the natural role of man
      - The Second Coming
        
        “The falcon cannot hear the falconer;” (line 2)
        
        There is a loss of control, and a loss of order. The falcon, representing the common person, is flying away from the order that once controlled it
  - - - From the opening pages, letters frame the story. Representation of manipulation of information, as well as limited information, the key sent with the first letter provides context that the letters are keys to understanding the framing. Later, Miles is accused of stealing letters, by the Governess herself, suggesting she believes he is manipulating information–yet she writes a letter (or manuscript) herself, detailing the story for Douglas, coming full circle
  - - - The Man in the Crowd is the symbol of a person who just doesn’t fit any expectation of social class, age, or behavior, he stands out yet can’t be defined
  - - - The three boys represent the Compson brothers, the trout represents Caddy. She is illusive to them, and mysterious, well known as a character, but uncatchable, none of the boys will ever understand their sister
  - - - Page 13 is nearly all about describing the flowers in Miss Pym’s flower shop. Each flower represents a type of person, and their beautiful, but fleeting bloom of life.
  - - - “Yam, the king of crops, was a very exacting king,” (Achebe 33)
        
        Yams are the major crop, and also represent the passing on of heritage and tradition. Okonkwo doesn’t inherit yams from his father, and so starts his yam farm from an investor, the later passes (or attempts to) pass those yams and the knowledge of growing yams to his son, but is often too harsh, and the tradition becomes traumatic and begins to break down.
  - - - Their eyes were watching god, Zora Neale Hurston
        
        “ Mules and brutes had occupied their skins. But now, the sun and the bossman had gone, so the skins felt powerful and human,” (Hurston 1)
        
        Beasts of burden, specifically the mule, represent forced labor. Here, where skin is emphasized in the same breath as the bossman, it represents the pain of oppression, while the characters are living post slavery. Being turned into animals in the eyes of their ‘employers’ during the day, the return back to human at night, it’s almost mystical
