The Stages

The journey a river takes from its source is called the course of the river. This course is broken up into three stages.(Below)

River Transportation
As a river moves from the source to the sea, it carries, or transports, its load. The load is transported in a number of ways by the river. River transportation is also known as fluvial transportation.
- Large pebbles and stones are rolled and dragged along the river bed by the force of the water. This method is known as traction.
- Small pebbles are bounced along the river bed. This is known as saltation.
- Tiny particles are held in suspension in the water - the movement of water is fast enough to keep them from dropping to the river bed.
- Dissolved minerals like limestone are carried in solution so they cannot be seen.
River deposition
River deposition is also known as fluvial deposition. Rivers deposit their load when they begin to slow down and lose energy. The heaviest material such as rocks and pebbles is deposited first. This happens. (below)
