they were his only possession and by using them he would run out of hope. I think in some ways the song repeats itself almost like hes trying to convince himself that the matches will save him but I think he knows things are not good.

The matches were the only way he could survive, the only way he could get heat and not freeze to death at night, he could also cook food with the fire. Without them he knew he would die soon.
The counting down of the matches in the jar was a literal counting down of his last days, but also created a metaphorical sense of doom.
