        acid + metal → salt + hydrogen
        
        A “pop” sound heard with lighted splint (test for hydrogen)
        
        The name of a salt consists of two parts. It allows us to know the identities of metal
        and acid used in the reaction
        
        Nitric acid → nitrate salt
        
        Sulfuric acid → sulfate salt
        
        Hydrochloric acid → chloride salt
        
        Salts are neutral substances
      - Carbonates
        
        acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide
        
        Carbonates contain metal or ammonium ions.
        
        Acids react with carbonate compounds to form salt, water and carbon dioxide
        
        Limewater (or calcium hydroxide) is used to test for the carbon dioxide produced from the reaction
        
        it is chemical test as the presence of carbon dioxide will turn the limewater chalky
      - Bases/alkalis
        
        acid + base/alkali → salt + water
        
        Acids react with bases or alkalis to form salt and water. This reaction is called neutralisation
        
        The solution formed is neutral
