a whistle-blower is someone who reports certain types of wrongdoings at work that negatively affects the public. whistle-blowers are protected by the law
2 types of whistleblowing:
- internal: reporting misconducts to someone else within the same organisation
- external: reporting misconduct to someone outside of the organisation, e.g. law.
you're allowed to raise concern at any time about an incident that happened in the past, is happening now, or that will happen in the future.
only certain complaints can count as whistleblowing:
- a criminal offence, e.g. fraud
- someone's health and safety is in danger
- risk or actual damage to the environment
- a miscarriage of justice
- the company is breaking the law
- someone is covering up a wrong doing
bullying / harassment / discrimination does not count as whistle blowing unless its in the public interest.
