Sedimentary processes

-
turbidity currents
-
they occur when unstable piles of sediment begin to slide and then flow because mixtures of sediment and water are denser than surrounding water

Weathering
-
insolation
mechanical disintegration of rock caused by the continued expansion and contraction due to daytime heating and nighttime cooling.

flocculation
explains how tiny particles of clay, which are transported by suspension by rivers suddenly begin to deposit when rivers flow into the sea
when clay particles are transported by rivers into the sea an electrical charge begins to develop around the outer surfaces of the clay particle. The charge is generated by the presence of salt in the sea water. The charges can be +ve or -ve on different parts of the clay surface. as a result the particles of clay with work together when 2 particles of clay with different charged surfaces are in close juxtaposition. As more particles stick together over time the clumps of flocculated clay can for heavy enough to sink.
coal
Lignite
60%-70% Carbon content
soft, brown, compressed peat
sub bituminous
70%-80% Carbon content
dull black, harder than Lignite
Bituminous
80%-90% Carbon content
Shiny black coal, used in power stations
Anthracite
90%-97% Carbon content
Hard glassy black coal, burns high energy
