Example 1 - Children need independence and choice. You can do this by encouraging children to solve small problems by themselves. You should also avoid taking over every task. You should guide and not control.
Example 2 - Children need the feeling that their actions and experiences have meaning and benefits. This could be by giving them age-appropriate responsibilities such as feeding a fish or doing small chores.
Example 3 - Children need structure and predictability to aid their day to day life. You can help with this by maintaining daily routine such as a set bedtime or mealtime.

Example 2 - Children need to communicate and express thoughts. You can help with this by actively listening and responding thoughtfully. You can also encourage taking in turns to talk.
Example 3 - Children also need emotional connection. You can aid with this by offering affection such as hugs, smiles and kind words.
Example 4 - Children need friendships. It may be hard to aid with this but you can arrange playdates with other parents or teach your child social skills necessary for growing and making friendships.

Emotional Needs
Emotional needs are the needs that children need to feel loved, secure, valued and understood.
Example 1 - Children need to be loved, cared for and valued. You can support these needs by showing love and affection. This could be by offering quality time for the child, giving physical affection such as giving hugs. You should also remind the child that you love them.
Example 2 - Children need to be seen, heard and understood. A way you can support emotional needs is to give them plenty of attention and understanding. You can do this by listening to them without interrupting or judging and reflect on their feelings with words.
Example 3 - Children need to feel capable and confident. A important thing to do is to encourage children and give them support. You can do this by praising effort rather than the outcome and encourage them to try new things, even if they do not suceed.
Example 4 - Children need to make their own choices and express their feelings in a safe way. This could be by offering choices such as what they wear that day. You could also encourage skills and hobbies such as drawing, playing music or other hobbies. It is also important to validate their feelings even when you cannot grant what they want.
Example 5 - Children need to learn compassion and awareness. You can support this by modelling what empathy looks like. This could be by actively showing kindness in front of your child to others. You can also speak about feelings openly, yours or your child's. This means the child can learn different feelings but can also learn how to emphasize with them.
