Chapter 15: Oral Presentations
Formatting a presentation
middle slides (3+) should be methods and results.
Include the most important details and figures should be large with no caption.
Include a reference slide if needed.
2nd slide should be the background and reason of the research.
Finish the presentation with a conclusion and support.
1st slide provide and overview of the presentation.
Slides should be appealing but not distracting.
Avoid bright colors and small font sizes (font should be 20+).
Audience viewing
It is important to consider the audience when introducing the topic.
Non-science audience may need more background introduction to the topic.
Science audience may already have an understanding of the topic and extensive background is not necessary.
Begin the introduction broadly and narrow down to the topic.
Presentation help
Prepare visual aids in advance.
Prepare index cards or speaker notes using large fonts to easily read.
Notes should be quick information or outlines
Practice the presentation multiple times before the final presentation.
Avoid speech fillers (Um, So, Uh)
Face the audience and make eye contact.
Do not exceed the time allotted for the presentation.
Each slide should take 1-2 minutes.
Do not rush through the presentation it may cause confusion or sound bad.
