Subversive Performance

Butler: Drag, gender non-conformity as resistance
Gender is an act if it’s an act, then it can be acted on in many different ways, to contest the usual norms.
Drag, gender nonconformity, etc., show how gender is created, not biological; therefore, all gender is a performance, imitation.
Gender performance can be subversive. If we perform gender in different ways than how society expects us to, we are disrupting those expectations, and therefore challenging the idea that gender is something that is naturally occurring.
