FLEA ALLERGY DERMATITIS (FAD)
What is it?
allergic reaction to proteins in flea saliva
How is it caused?
saliva is injected into the pet's skin when it bites to feed
Clinical signs
intense itching
alopecia
skin lesions
red, inflamed or 'hot spots'
crusts and scabs
papules
thickened and darkened skin
secondary infections
flea dirt
Treatment
Environmental
vacuum and wash pet's bedding in hot water
pet-safe flea products
Medications for itching and inflammation
steroids
eg: prednisolone
antibiotics if secondary bacterial infection develops
topical treatments like shampoos and sprays may provide some relief
