Interesting thought
I think many people become ashamed that they aren't able to understand health information which then correlates to them thinking that they are not intelligent and feel judged. Instead, the providers need to have empathy and adjust communication so that everyone can have equal access to health information. - chap 22
When learning about chapter 28 it made me realize how patient often make health decisions based on data that they don't fully understand which brings light on an ethical responsibility to explain the data clearly.
It was surprising to how healthcare workers slip into medical shorthand without realizing they are doing it. Even though this is such a small habit it can affect a patient ability to follow healthcare instructions accurately. Therefore, I think it is important to note when providers meet with patient, they could have little reminders to speak in plain language.- chap 17
Plain language is more than just a communication style but instead it shows the providers truly understand the patients and know that most don't understand complex medical jargon and by simplifying wording during visits it can allow for the patient to comprehend and act more informed on health care plans. - chap 31
It struck me that in my own life I often assume “if it’s on the internet, I can understand and use it” but this article highlights how many skills behind that assumption and what it takes to fully understand the information I was given Which may be missing for many users that try to process ehealth. When reading about how most Americans have a below basic or basic reading level at 36% it made me realize that there needs to be a call to action on fixing this issue such as implementing health literacy courses within the school system that students are required to take so that this issue does not keep occurring and it can help People in the future have more informed decision making when it comes to their health care.
The article produced by the CDC maybe reflect on how healthcare settings can often deploy digital tools assuming that pages will use them but this article suggests that we should treat digital readiness and literacy as something that they do not fully understand and therefore need elaborate on how everything works.
