Medicine exists in all that connects and separates us within our everyday experiences.
Medicine is Positive and Negative.
Positive Medicine is what makes and brings a community closer together.
Positive Medicine is established through acts of kindness, respect, and cooperation in a community.
Negative Medicine is what disturbs social order, connections, and tolerance.
Negative Medicine can be observed through issues that are prevalent in many relationship dynamics.
Medicine is tradition.
Many First Nations communities observe four traditional medicines:
Tobacco, representing a connection to the spiritual world.
Sweetgrass, representing kindness and empathy.
Sage, representing a removal of negative emotions from the mind and heart.
Cedar, representing cleansing, and also protection and strength.
Medicine is in everything.
Every act and outcome is one of medicine.
Medicine is art.
Medicine exists in music, such as through drums that are traditional to Indigenous values.
Medicine exists in theatre, and within the visions of artists in theatre.
Theatre is passed down in its experiences and perspectives from different generations of artists.
Medicine exists in literature, and the thoughts that are expressed by individual persons.
Personal Note: Despite not being Indigenous, I can still resonate with what has been expressed from this author. We are all and have been subject to the effects of positive or negative medicine at some point in our lives, both in minimum and maximum extents.
