The Groundnut (Peanut)
-
The groundnut, also called peanut, is one of the most important crops in Senegal and many African countries.
It plays a major role in the economy, food supply, and industry.
Its seeds are used to produce oil, butter, and other products.
Groundnut farming provides income for many rural families and supports the development of the country.
-
-
Since the colonial era, it has remained one of the country’s main cash crops.
It helps to feed the population, create jobs, and develop rural areas.
However, depending only on peanuts can be dangerous for the economy, especially during bad harvests or when prices fall.
-
Thus, groundnut will remain a national wealth and a key part of sustainable agricultural development
-
Groundnut is rich in protein, which helps body growth.
-
It provides vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, magnesium, and iron.

According to this theory, the colony had to produce mainly groundnuts for export to the metropolis (France).
Farmers were encouraged to grow peanuts instead of food crops like millet, rice, or maize.
-
However, this policy made the Senegalese economy dependent on a single crop, creating problems when production or prices fell.
