DEF: the smallest contractile unit of a muscle fiber, found between 2 z-lines.

Neuromuscular junction
A motor neuron's action potential hits the axon terminal, releasing acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft. ACh binds to the motor end plate, triggering an electrical signal in the muscle fiber that makes its myofibrils contract, then the ACh is cleared so the muscle can relax.
