Definition / Function
• Give extra information about people or things
• Combine clauses without repeating information
• Example: Marie Curie is the woman who discovered radium
Relative Pronouns
:
• which → things
• that → people & things
• whose → possession
• where → places
• when → time
• who / whom → people
Types of Relative Clauses
• Defining RCs
– Essential information
– No commas
– Can use “that” instead of who/which
– Can omit pronoun if object
– Example: The house Jack built
– ⚠️ Don’t repeat subject/object
• Non-Defining RCs
– Use commas
– Cannot use “that”
– Cannot omit pronoun
– Example: Lord Thompson, who is 76, has retired
– Extra (non-essential) information
