- - - - Protect entire communications circuits by creating a secure tunnel between two points using either a hardware solution or a software solution that encrypts all traffic entering one end of the tunnel and decrypts all traffic leaving the other end of the tunnel
      - Encrypt all the data (header, trailer, address, routing data)

  - - - Provide assurances of message integrity and authentication and access control and prevent replays attacks
    - - Provide confidentiality and integrity of packet contents, encryption and limited authentication, prevents replay attacks
      - ESP is sometimes used without AH, but never the other way

        Only the packet payload is encrypted
        
        For end-to-end encryption
      - Tunnel mode
        
        The entire packet including the header is encrypted
        
        For link encryption
