Hyperthyroidism
Risk factors/Causes
Grave's Disease
Toxid Adenoma
Thyroiditis
TSH secreting pituitary adenoma
Thyrotoxicosis
genetic predisposition
two aunts on mother's side with thyroid problems
1 uncle with diabetes (autoimmune relevance)
Pathophysiology
Hypothalamus secretes TH (Thyroid Hormone)
TH travels to anterior pituitary gland
TH stimulates TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)
TH travels to Thyroid gland and, with iodide, helps synthesize T3 and T4
T3 and T4 enter circulation and bind to a carrier protein
T3 and T4 travel to organ tissues to bind receptors and exert effects on that organ
Negative feedback loop altered
T3 and T4 continue to circulate and exert effects on organs
these effects are pronounced
Thinning hair
c/o hair thinning
exopthalamus
enlarged thyroid
palpable thyroid
tachycardia
heart failure
pt experiencing racing heart
pt senses heart fluttering
weight loss
patient has unexplained weight loss
diarrhea
warm skin/sweaty palms
occasional hot flashes
hyper-reflexia
tremors in hands
