The process begins in the blackwater tank, pumped by the macerator to form a slurry into the aeration tank, as this slurry is much easier to break down
Operation of STP
In the settlement hopper further sludge sinks to the bottom and the effluent on top weirs into a chlorine contact tank
From there it moves into the collection tank, and grey water is added to reduce the chlorine concentration
Undigested waste stays at the bottom and digested waste is transported to the settlement hopper by the air lift pump
The waste then enters the aeration compartment, with ventilation provided by the aeration diffuser

Black Water via a macerator goes through a coarse screen, removing large particles
If air supply fails H2S will be produced, in a process called anaerobic digestion
