Protagonist spends his weekends living in the family home in Edinburgh and Monday to Friday, living with his alternate wife in London. It's an arrangement that has worked well for three years. Both wives work for the same company.

He receives a call and discovers he has another child. He wants to do the right thing and connect with his child. But, he fears it could drag him back into an unforgiving past he thought he had escaped from.

His marriage is ambiguous - they are not a functioning man and wife but share a house and do things as though they are. His wife still likes the respectability of being married.
The daughter is a bit of a high-maintenance, sensitive, drama queen. His wife indulges her sensitivities; he laughs at them, e.g. seeing a therapist about OCD.
She is aware of the arrangement. so long as she gets what she wants, that's fine.
