Tectonic Hazard - Coggle Diagram
Tectonic Hazard
Plate margins
Constructive
2 plates moving away from each other, creating gap. Magma rises through gap creating more land (sea-floor spreading)Events:
- Volcanoes (magma rises gap between two plates- minor eruptions)
- Earthquakes (magma rises causes minor tremors)
Conservative
2 plates sliding past each other from convection currents/slab pull (Can move opposite or same direction at different speeds)Events:
- Earthquakes (plates sliding past can get stuck = pressure build up, sudden movement releases pressure)
Destructive
2 plates move towards each other, plate that is more dense subducts to the lighter plateSlab pull: When tectonic plate's weight become denser during subduction zone, pulling the rest of the plate behind itEvents:
- Volcanoes (sinking oceanic plate becomes magma, rising to the earths surface)
- Earthquakes (plates sliding past can get stuck = pressure build up, sudden movement releases pressure)
Collision
2 plate margins moving towards each other during convection currents/slab pull. Same density, no subduction, forced upwards = mountain ranges (Fold Mountains)Events:
- Earthquakes ( 2 colliding plates crashing into each other creating huge amounts of pressure, sudden release can cause violent earthquakes)
Convection currents: Circular movements in the mantle causes the tectonic plates to move (Mantle rock heated by core, warm material rises to surface, material starts to cool and sink)
4 layers of the earth
Mantle: layer beneath the crust (Semi liquid, thick)
-
Crust: Outer layer of earth (Solid, thin layer)
-
Tectonic Plates
Crust split into pieces, these large rocks float on the mantle
-
-
Continental drift: theory that the land of earth was once one large land called Pangea that slowly moved apart
Natural Hazard: Natural process that threatens people or properties. If no threat, it is a natural event.
Meteorological hazard: hazard that occurs in the atmosphere (e.g. hurricane, thunder, lightening)
