Measurement Methods
Viable Plate Count: method is the most frequently used method for measuring bacterial populations (bc non-expensive, fast, only counts living cells, and is a good estimate)
-
In the viable plate count method, one bacterium grows to form one colony (CFU) colony forming unit
The direct microscopic count using a Petroff-Hauser cell counter is quick and inexpensive but requires a high number of bacteria and counts both live and dead cells
Spectrophotometer: can be used to provide an indirect estimate of bacterial numbers by measuring turbidity (amount of light that goes thru a sample)
