        analysis: In this moment, David recognizes how alone he is without Giovanni. Giovanni knew him and saw him and gave him a safe place in his room, so to suddenly be outside that space is jarring. David has also 'fallen out of the web' in a traditional sense, leaving him with nothing.
- - - - "I wanted to be inside again, with the light and the safety, with my manhood unquestioned, watching my woman putting the children to bed." (104)
        
        analysis: Our comfort and safety category falls apart, dying with an executed Giovanni and blocking off his room forever. David looks for love in Hella but can't find it. Any feelings of acceptance or comfort are absorbed into a general cloud self hatred and discomfort. If Giovanni's room was the last place that David could be himself/Giovanni was the last person he could be himself with, David is now completely alone, doomed to always be on the outside. There's no going back to safety.

        Pivotal moment: :star: David experiences not only intense guilt and grief for Giovanni, but also self-hatred as he accepts that he has lost his safe place and life with Hella is not the same, even though he's found another place to be 'inside'.
