Ch. 10: Photosynthesis
Feeding the Biosphere
Photosynthesis nourishes almost the entire living world directly or indirectly.
Autotrophs- are "self-feeders" that can sustain themselves without eating anything derived from other organisms.
Producers of the Biosphere- produce organic molecules from CO2 and other inorganic molecules.
Photoautotrophs- use energy of SUNLIGHT to make organic molecules.
Ex. almost all plants
Heterotrophs- "Other feeders that must obtain material from other organisms.
consumers of the Biosphere- must consume organic material from a source.
Decomposers**- heterotrophs that consume dead organic material or feces,
Ex. fungi

Nature of Sunlight
~Light is electromagnetic energy or electromagnetic radiation that travels in rhythmic waves.
Wavelength- a measure of the distance between crests of electromagnetic waves.
~ranges from < 1nm to > a km
Electromagnetic Spectrum- the entire range of electromagnetic energy, or radiation.
Visible Light- the colors seen by the human eye that also drives photosynthesis.
~380 nm- 740nm
Photons- discrete particles of light that have a fixed quantity of energy.
~inversely related to wavelength.
~Shorter wavelengths have more energy per photon of light.

Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis- converts solar energy into chemical energy within chloroplasts.
~Reverse direction of electron flow of cellular respiration.
Photosynthesis is a redox process in which H2O is oxidized and CO2 is reduced.
Photosynthesis is an endergonic process- the energy boost is provided by light.

Calvin Cycle
PHASE 2
-Uses NADPH and ATP to reduce CO2 to produce glucose
Does not require light
Occurs in the stroma
Reactants:
NADPH
ATP
CO2
Products:
1 G3P molecule
THREE PHASES:
Carbon Fixation
Reduction
Regeneration of RuBP
-
Reduction
Each 3-PGA molecule is phosphorylated by 6 ATP and reduced by 6 NADPH to produce ONE G3P
~3 turns of the Calvin Cycle = 1 G3P
~Two G3P = 1 glucose molecule
~every 3 CO2 molecules to enter cycle- 6 G3P are formed.
one in six of the G3P formed is used to produce glucose
~other 5 are used to regenerate RuBP
