we place the tape measure on one tank where the water met the edge, we then held the tape measure to the other bank and read the measure

flow meter
we chose a random point in the river which was not blocked by vegetation place the flow meter in the water and read the screen
calipers
we randomly selected 50 rocks from the river and measured the largest rock and the 8th largest rock with a pair of calipers.
