Microbial Growth

BiofilmsCommunication
-
-
Biofilms is a structured community of microorganisms that forms when planktonic cells attach to surfaces.
-
-
Biofilms protect the microorganisms from antibiotics/antiseptics, desiccation, and the host immune system.
Lactoferrin is a substance that inhibits biofilm formation by binding to iron, which inhibits motility (Pseudomonads)

Measurment Methods
The serial dilution viable plate count method is the most frequently used method for measuring bacterial populations.
In the viable plate count method, one bacterium grows to form one colony(CFU).
-
The direct microscope count using a Petroff-Hauser cell counter is quick and inexpensive but requires a high number of bacteria and counts both live and dead cells.
Spectrophotometer can be used to provide an indirect estimate of bacterial numbers by measuring turbidity.
