Anti - Poverty Programs
Objective:
➡️ Removal of poverty — Major goal of Indian developmental strategy
Current anti-poverty strategy
Based on two main factors:
(i) Promotion of Economic Growth
(ii) Targeted Anti-Poverty Programmes
Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction:
Early decades (1950–1980):
Low per capita income growth
Poverty ~45% (no major decline)
1980s–1990s:
Growth rate ↑ from 3.5% → 6%
2000–2020:
Rapid development continued
⚠️ Problem: Agricultural growth below expectations → affects rural poor (majority depend on agriculture)
Programs: Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment :
Provides 100 days of wage employment to each rural household
Ensures livelihood security
Promotes sustainable development (addresses drought, deforestation, soil erosion)
1/3rd jobs reserved for women
Wage rate for unskilled workers revised regularly
Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Abhiyan :
(formerly Mid-Day Meal Scheme)
Objectives:
Improve child nutrition (calorie + protein intake)
Increase school enrolment & reduce dropouts
Targets: Students of Classes I–VIII (Govt., Govt.-aided schools, RTE centres)
Implementation: With local govt. + community support
