Adolescence: The Science of Becoming Me
Brain Development ðŸ§
Myelination
Myelination is the creation of more enhanced connectivity in the brain and leads to increased white matter
Synaptic Pruning
Synaptic pruning is important for the building of neural networks, as it prunes neurons and decreases grey matter
Prefrontal Cortex
One of the last areas to mature, the prefrontal cortex is needed for cognitive control and emotional regulation
Reward System
Reward systems have evolved to promote desirable behaviour. In adolescents, this is heightened with drugs, adventures, foods, and financial payoffs. This can lead to exaggerated risk taking.
Identity Formation
Marcia's Statuses
Identity achievement
When one finally arrives at a sense of self after exploring alternatives
I know who I want to be because I tried lots of options
Identity Moratorium
When commitment is delayed such that experimentation may occur
I don't know who I want to be, but I am trying different things
Identity Foreclosure
When commitment is premature and rigid, often defined by parents
I definitely know what I want to be, and I would never consider something else
Identity Diffusion
When there is no commitment to any ideology
I have no idea who I want to be
Erikson's Stage
The 5th stage, the crisis Erikson describes is primarily surrounding identity. He focused on finding a stable definition of oneself, and answering things like "Who am I?" or "Where do I want to go in life?"
Emerging Adulthood :baby: :arrow_right: :man:
Emerging adulthood is the stage between 18 and 29 where identity is still being discovered, and often causes things like marriage and parenthood to be delayed compared to the past
The feeling that one is between being a teenager and an adult
Lots of optimism and hope, as it is viewed as the "age of opportunities"
Due to modern pressures, like financial independence and longer educations
Connections to Me :silhouettes:
I often find myself being motivated by things that bring me more immediate happiness, like playing games instead of working. This makes sense, given my heightened susceptibility to my reward system
I feel as though I have gone through many stages similar to Marcia's statuses, but I know feel like I am truly trying a number of different things to find who I want to be
