Biology Chapter 8
Energy
Potential energy, potential tp occur
Chemical energy, potential energy available for release in a chemical reaction
Heat, thermal energy in transfer from one object to another
Capacity tp cause change, can be used to do work
-
-
Thermal energy, energy associated with random movement of atoms/molecules
Kentic energy, energy associated with motion
Gibbs Free Energy
-
-
-
-
Free energy in the portion of a systems energy that can do work when temperature and pressure are uniform throughout the system, as in a living cell
Metabolism
Sum of organisms chemical reactions, catabolic and anabolic reactions
-
Systems
Isolated systems, closed to surroundings
Open systems, open to surroundings
Positive G, increases free energy available, less stability
Negative G, decreases free energy available more stability
Exergonic, releases free energy
Endergonic, absorbs free energy
Spontaneous Processes
Occurs without energy input, can happen quickly or slowly
Phosphorylation, transfer of phosphate group from ATP to another molecule, recipient molecule a phosphorylated intermediate is more reactive
Energy Coupling, use of exergonic processes to drive an endergonic one
