Natural science
Observe and classify the different types of bees, honeybees, bumblebees
How can we tell the difference between the honeybee and the bumblebee? - Honeybees have 3 segments, they have 3 pairs of legs, a pair of wings and a pair of antennas. Bumblebees are large bees and have hairy bodies they have a pair of wings. (J.Nolan; Not dated)
The students will look at different pictures of bees and see the similarities and differences between them; they will then need to differentiate between the bees looking at different pictures.
The teacher can explain all the different products made by a cow; the teacher can then set up a theme table with all the different products on it as well as a tasting section where the students can taste the food products that was produced by a cow as mentioned previously.
Cows give us beef and milk; the milk can then be turned int dairy products. Cows give us other products like leather, gelatine and tallow. (Animal smart. org; Not dated)
Farm animals that give us food, clothes and resources, cows
Animals that help people, donkeys and donkey carts
Why did we use donkey carts? - They were used as the primary mode of transportation for moving goods, especially people in rural areas with low quality roads. (Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary; 2025)
The students can watch a video of a donkey cart, the teacher can then ask questions about the video like "What was on the cart?" "How where the donkeys attached to the cart?" to spark conversation amongst the learners.
History on animals, guide dogs
First training of dogs to become guide dogs was in 1931, almost 100 years ago, they have now come a very long way since then. (Guidedogs.orf.uk; 2025)
The teacher can explain what a guide dog is, (a dog that helps someone that is blind or that is sick) then show the students pictures of guide dogs throughout the years, then have the students try to spot what is different between the photos, for example how the harnesses have advanced, how the dogs have advanced.
Tecnology
Insects that give us food, bees
What is the process of making honey? - 1. The bees collect nectar 2. They transport the nectar bat to their hive. 3. In the hive the nectar undergoes the honey making process. 4. The honey is then stored in the honeycomb. (honeyflow; 2024)
The teacher can explain the honey making process to the students as seen above, the teacher can then set up a theme table that will show the honey making process, from the flowers to the hive to the honeycomb to the honey. Allow the students to have a hands-on experience by having objects that the students can touch, for example different types of flowers, honeycomb and have a station where the students can taste some honey.
The habitats of animals, chickens
A chicken coop needs enough space for all the chickens, they need food and water, dry bedding, airflow and laying boxes. (J.Kurczodyns; 2025)
The teacher can show the students a well-built chicken coop, then the students should bring in equipment from home to build their own chicken coop, keeping in mind all the criteria for a well-built chicken coop as mentioned above.
