Personal perspective creates a new reality
Nguyen, Joseph. Don't Believe Everything You Think (Expanded Edition): Why Your Thinking Is the Beginning & End of Suffering. Authors Equity, 2024.
This book talks about how our thoughts create the way we see life. Nguyen says that our happiness or suffering comes from how we think, not what happens around us. He wants people to notice their thoughts and understand how they shape their reality.
Defense= Joseph Nguyen is a well known writer who focuses on self growth and how our thoughts affect how we feel. His book is published by a trusted company, and he uses psychology ideas to explain how the mind works.
This book supports the idea that a person’s beliefs and past experiences shape their reality. I’ll use it to explain that perception is an active creation, not just a reflection of the world and what you are seeing
"Reality is not a fixed place; it is continuously shaped by our beliefs and interpretations."
"You don’t see life as it is; you see life as you are."
"Most of our suffering comes from identifying with our thoughts instead of observing them."

Defense - This article is published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, a peer-reviewed journal, and the authors are experts in mental health from respected institutions. It is also indexed in PubMed Central, a biomedical database.
The article explains that a person’s beliefs shape how they perceive the world and interpret events. These beliefs influence their thoughts, emotions, and actions.
I’ll use the Roa Article to give scientific evidence that our beliefs filter out perception. This article backs up that our interpretation of events is shaped by prior experiences. THis showing a biochemical and neurological basis for our personal perspective shaping our "reality"
"The mind doesn’t experience reality directly; it experiences its own thoughts about reality."
"Beliefs act as internal commands to the brain, guiding how we interpret events."
"Early experiences and learning shape the structure and function of the brain, influencing perception throughout life."
Both emphasize that beliefs filter our experiences.
"How Expectation Influences Perception." MIT News, 15 July 2019,
https://news.mit.edu/2019/how-expectation-influences-perception-0715
The article explains that our brain uses past knowledge and expectations to interpret what we see and hear. This affects how we perceive events, even when the information is unclear.
Defense= MIT News is run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and reports on research from its scientists. The article is based on real studies, making it reliable.
I’ll use this article to show that prior knowledge and expectations actively influence our perception. This Article helps to connect the psychological and neurological aspects of perception to the idea that reality is created by our perosnal perspectives
Both of these articles show a connection to neurological basis to my thesis
quotes
"The brain uses prior knowledge to fill in missing information, shaping perception in the process."
"Our expectations guide how we interpret sensory information, affecting how we see and understand the world."
Even ambiguous or unclear stimuli are interpreted through the lens of what we expect to happen."
Both of these articles provide evidence that perception isn’t unbiased it’s influenced by memory and learned patterns
Contraction Bias: How Previous Experiences Influence Our Perception." Scientifica, 8 June 2020,
https://www.scientifica.uk.com/neurowire/contraction-bias-how-previous-experiences-influence-our-perception
.
The article explains that our past experiences influence how we see things. Contraction bias happens when we judge something based on the average of what we’ve seen before, rather than on the thing itself.
Defense- The article is published on Scientifica, a site that shares scientific research, and it is based on studies by Dr. Athena Akrami and her colleagues
I’ll use this article to provide support that perception is shaped by memory and past experiences. These articles illustrate how our judgments are biased by what we’ve seen before.
"Contraction bias occurs when our memory of a stimulus is influenced by what we have seen before, pulling judgments toward the average."
"Past experiences shape how we interpret and remember new information."
"Our perceptions are rarely objective; they are molded by what we’ve learned from previous observations."
