Animals and creatures that help us
Natural science
Animals that give us food
what are the animals that give us food ?
Animals like cows ,bees and chicken give us meat, milk, honey and eggs (Department of Basic Education[DBE],2021)
The type of inquiry based activity i will give will be classification where I will ask the learners to group amongst foods that plants give us and foods that animal give us ,they will then have to group them accordingly.
Living habitats of animals that help us
where do the animals that help us live and how does it help them?
Animals that help us , live in special places called habitats, which give them what they need to survive and do their work. Cows and sheep live on farms so they can feed on grass and bees live in hives where they make honey. Research shows that teaching kids about the habitats of different animals supports environmental awareness(Mahlangu,2022)
Active observation and reasoning inquiry
I will place large pictures of different habitats and give children cards of different animals where they will role play and group themselves according to the animals they are.
Social sciences
Animals that work for us
Types of works that animals perform :Donkeys carry goods so they are used as transportation ,trained dogs assist police in crime , others guide blind people while others are used to herd livestock .Department of Basic Education[DBE],2021
i will give them an activity where they will match animals according to the types of work they do for people
Famous working animals in history
Throughout history many animals were known for their bravery and hard work : Horses helped explorers and soldiers travel long distances before cars and trains were invented ,dogs were used by messengers to deliver important letters. Van der Walt (2019), states that horses and donkeys were essential in the early transport and trade systems of South Africa.
I will give the learners an activity where they will help me place picture cards to show how the animals helped from the olden days till now .e.g they rode horses then now here are bicycles.
Technology
Pollination: Bees
Bees are important polllinators .Without bees many plants that give us fruits and vegetables could not reproduce (Food and Agriculture Organization,2020).Their work keeps farms productive and supports human food systems
i would give them an activity where they would help bees pollinate if there were no bees
:the learners will create their own their own bee or creature that will carry pollen between flowers using recycled materials.
Soil helpers : worms
What can we make if there are not enough worms?
i will give them an activity where they create a mini worm farm that includes soil layers ,sand ,shredded paper , leaf cuttings then we will evaluate if the worms would want to live there and how we cam make it better.
How do worms help make the soil healthy for growing plants?
Worms are natural recyclers that break down dead leaves and food waste into rich soil nutrients .They create tunnels that let air and water move through the soil , which helps plants grow strong roots. When there are not enough worms ,the soil loses its nutrients (United States Department of Agriculture,2021)
