Magistrates must be aged between 18 and 74 on appointment, but must retire at 75

When the defendant pleads not guilty the magistrates hold a trial - they will consider the evidence and deliver a verdict

If the defendant pleads guilty then the magistrates do not need to hold a trial, but will need to sentence the defendant
sentencing powers
Magistrates can impose a custodial sentence of up the 6 months for one offence, or 12 months for two or more offences
