o Execute – does the instruction, completes the action.
· Increasing the speed of your computer: the slower it is, the longer it takes to complete an FDE cycle. How can we increase the speed?
o Increase the clock speed – measures how fast the CPU completes each FDE cycle and is measured in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz), where 1GHz = 1000MHz. The higher the clock speed, the more FDE cycles can be performs in a second.
-
o Increase the number of cores – the more cores, the faster the computer’s performance.
-
o Volatile – everything in your memory will be lost when the computer is turned off. An example is RAM.
o Non-Volatile - Your files and storage will stay on your computer even after your computer is off. Examples are: ROM, Floppy disk, Hard drive, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, Solid State Drive & Memory stick.
· A computer system is a set of hardware and software devices which can input, process, output and store data. A smartphone is a type of computer.
· The Central Processing Unit (CPU) fetches instructions from the storage, decodes and then executes them.

-
o Primary – main memory that is closest to and directly accessed by the CPU. Examples include: RAM, ROM & Cache
o Secondary - outside of a computer system and are always non-volatile. Examples include: Floppy disk, Hard drive, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, Solid State Drive & Memory stick.
