ANIMALS AND CREATURES THAT HELP US
NATURAL SCIENCE
FARM ANIMALS AND THEIR BENEFITS
Animals such as cows, chickens and sheep helps humans by providing food and materials such as milk, eggs and wool for human use.
Learner investigate how milk is produced and processed.
They can either visit a local farm or watch a virtual farm tour, then allow them to create a diagram showing the process from cow to consumer that they would have learnt. (CAPS: Life and Living)
INSECTS THAT HELP THE ENVIRONMENT
Insects such as earthworms and bees help the environment by playing a crucial role in soil health and pollination.
Have learners observe a small garden area and record the insects that they find.
Identify the insects that are helpful. Share your findings through drawings and oral presentations. (WWF South Africa)
SOCIAL SCIENCE
ANIMALS IN COMMUNITIES AND CULTURES
Certain animals have a cultural as well as economic importance in various communities. Cows play an economic importance in the Zulu culture.
Have learners conduct small interviews with elder family members about how animals are used in their community.
Present what they have learnt in a poster to place in the classroom. (South African Heritage Council)
THE ROLES OF ANIMALS IN WORK AND DAILY LIFE
Animals assist humans with work and daily life such as farming, transportation and protection.
Learners create a timeline of the change of animal use in various communities. (DBE Social Sciences CAPS)
TECHNOLOGY
DESIIGNING TOOLS INSPIRED BY ANIMALS
Engineers and inventors study animal adaptations to create technology. For example, the flight of birds inspired the creation of airplanes.
Learners can design a simple flying object inspired by the bird.
With the use of paper, straws and tape they can create the design. After testing the design, they can evaluate it and improve where improvements are needed. (CAPS: Technology)
ANIMAL SHELTERS AND HABITATS
Humans build shelters to protect and ensure the health and safety of animals.
Learners can work in groups to design and build an animal shelter with the use of recyclable materials.
They can present their shelter to the classroom explaining their design and how it meets the needs of the chosen animal. (DBE Technology CAPS)
