Animals and Creatures that help us
NATURAL SCIENCE
SUB-TOPIC 1: Pollination
Key Concepts: Bees carry pollen so plants can grow food. (SANBI, 2023; Naudé & Meier, 2025).
Activity: Watch a short video of bees going to flowers and predict what happen without them.
SUB-TOPIC 2: Soil Health
Key Concept: Earthworms make soil rich and healthy
Activity: Compare two jars, one with worms and the other without, and record findings. (DBE, 2011: Naudé & Meier, 2025)
SOCIAL SCIENCE
SUB-TOPIC 1: Community Helpers and Animals
Key Concepts: People in various occupations work with animals, demonstrating community interdependence and care (Guiding Eyes for the blind, 2024).
Activity: Á day in the life'. Learners watch a video about a guide dog trainer and brainstorm the skills and values needed for the job
SUB-TOPIC 2: Protecting Helper Animals
Key concepts: We have a responsibility to care for and protect helper animals and their habitat, which is a key social value (National Wildlife Federation, n.d).
Activity: learners create a poster. example: 'Save the bees'.
TECHNOLOGY
SUB-TOPIC 1: Designing tools for Animals
Key Concept: We use technology to design tools and structures, like bee hotels, that help animals perform their roles or keeps them safe (DBE,2011).
Activity: Learners design and create a safe watering station for bees using a shallow container and pebbles.
SUB-TOPIC 2: Products and Processes
Key Concept: Technology is used to process raw materials from animals into products we use like turning milk into cheese and yogurt (Science Learning Hub, 2014).
Activity: Learners investigate and order picture cards showing the technological process of milk from cow to supermarket.
