Animals and Creatures that help us (Grade 3)
Social Science
Animals in the Community (Working Animals)
Animals are part of the social and economic structure of communities, providing food, transport, and assistance.(DBE, 2011: 57)
Community Role-Play. Learners role-play different community members (farmer, blind person, guide dog handler) and discuss the responsibilities and jobs associated with these animals. (Focus: Roles, Responsibility, Empathy) WCED, 2018
Importance of Conservation and Care
Conservation is a shared human responsibility to protect the environment and all living creatures for future generations(Gravett & Petersen, 2020)
Create a "Protect-a-Pet" Poster. Learners research a threat to one helper animal (e.g., pesticide harm to bees or habitat loss) and design a poster to educate others on how to protect them. (Focus: Research, Values, Communication)
Natural Science
Roles and Habitats of Helper Animals
All living things have specific roles in their ecosystems (e.g., pollination, decomposition).(DBE, 2011: 52)
Wormery Observation. Set up a clear jar/container to observe earthworms over a week, recording how they break down food scraps and change the soil. (Focus: Scientific Process Skills, Investigation, Recording)(Harlen, 2013)
Life Cycles and Needs
Animals and insects have specific life cycles and needs (food, water, shelter) that humans must respect.(DBE, 2011: 52)
Activity: Bee Life Cycle Sort. Learners cut out and sequence the stages of the bee life cycle and discuss the best plants/shelters to meet their needs. (Focus: Observation, Sequencing, Needs of Living Things)
Tecnonlogy
Technology in Animal Care & Production
Technology is used to improve care, safety, and production related to helper animals (e.g., milking machines, specialized harnesses).(DBE, 2011: 52)
Design a 'better tool'. Show images of simple and complex tools (e.g., old hand-milking vs. machine). Learners use recycled materials to design a better harness for a guide dog or an automated bee feeder. (Focus: Design, Problem-Solving, Materials).(WCED, 2018)
Digital Tools for Research & Communication
Digital tools (like tablets or phones) are a resource used to gather information and share discoveries about the world around us.
Digital Scavenger Hunt. Learners use a tablet to search for a 30-second video of a helper animal in action (e.g., a sheepdog, a therapy horse) and share one new fact they discovered. (Focus: Information Literacy, Communication, Digital Skills)(Harlen, 2013)
