facet joint OA - Coggle Diagram
facet joint OA
-
pathophysiology
1.hyaline cartilage breaks down due to wear and tear, injury etc
- joint space narrowing as cartilage erodes
- friction and inflammation from bony surfaces rubbing
- inflamed synovial membrane thickens and synovial fluid becomes less effective as lubricant
- sclerosis of underlying bone (increased density and hardening of bone tissue)
- forms osteophytes (bone spurs) as body responds to irritation by producing more bone tissue
- joint capsule thickening and enlargement
- synovial cysts form and bone spurs, inflammation and degeneration can lead to irritation or compression and cause pain
assessment
posture assymetry, muscle atrophy, altered lumbar lordosis
-
ROM - flex, extension, lat side flexion and rotation

aetiology
-
-
cervical degeneration increases with age and is at C2-3, C3-4, C4-5
disc degeneration = loss of disc height, segmental instability and increased load on facets
signs/symptoms
unilateral/bilateral back pain, groin, buttocks, thighs
-
worse pain in morning, inactivity or stress exercises
definition
-
from degeneration of intervertebral discs, due to loss of joint space, narrowing, loss of synovial fluid and loss of cartilage and bony overgrowth
