Social Science
Communication
How do Honey Bee's communicate through Dance?
Honey Bees communicate through three types of dances.
- Waggle Dance. This is to communicate that a Bee has found a new source of nectar
- Shake Dance. This is to communicate more helper bees are needed to collect the nectar.
- Tremble Dance. This is to communicate that more bees are needed to process the nectar into honey.
(Nova Online, 1998)
Class Activity:
Dance and Movement. Students will watch a short video on the different dances and how they are performed (Moving from side to side etc). The teacher will call out different instructions (The bees have found new nectar, more bees need to help collect nectar etc). Students copy the dance in the video to match the instruction.
Social Structure
Can you name the three types of bees we find in a beehive?
- Queen Bee (there is only one queen bee in the hive)
- Drones (They are the male bee's)
- Worker Bee's (They are the females, and do all the work in the hive, and collecting of pollen)
(Mid-Atlantic Apiculture Research + extension consortium (n.d))
Class Activity:
Bee role playing game. Students will be divided into Queens, Drones and Worker bees. Teacher will call out different things that each bee does (Queen lays an egg, worker bees collect pollen etc). Students must pretend to preform that action according to their designated bee.
Technology
Bee Hives
What are Bee hives made out of?
A bee hive is made out of beeswax that the bee's produce. The Beeswax is shaped into hexagon structures. The structures are used to store the babies, their honey and their pollen.
(AZ Queen Bee, 2019)
Class Activity:
Students will make their own bee hives using materials such as bubble wrap (to mimic the hexagon structure) sticks, leaves etc. Students are free to be creative with this activity.
Pollination
Where do bees find pollen?
Pollen is found on flowers. Bees land on a flower to collect pollen. When they do this, pollen sticks to their layer of hair. When the bee lands on another of the same flower, the pollen lands on that flower helping it produce more fruits and flowers.
(Goodwin M, 2012)
Class Activity:
Students can craft a bee out of pipe cleaners, paper, pom poms etc. Students will take their bees outside into the garden and pretend to collect pollen, landing on different flowers.
Natural Science
Physical Characteristics
Name 5 physical characteristics of a bee:
- The honeybee has three sets of legs which split into six segments.
- They had two sets of eyes (five in total)
- The body of the honeybee is divided to three sections
- They have two pairs of wings
- They are covered in a layer of hair to help gather pollen
(Perfect Bee,2025)
Class activity:
Students will create their own bee using finger painting.
Students will dip their fingers into yellow paint to create the body. Then add the wings, legs and black strips with a marker.
Life Cycle
What is the life cycle of a honeybee?
It is Divided into four stage:
- Egg - The queen bee lays an egg
- Larva - the egg will hatch into a Larva after three days
- Pupa - The larva will spin a cocoon around its self and form into a pupa.
- Adult - Once the pupa has finishing growing and developing, it turns into an adult bee
(Honeybee Research Centre (n.d))
Class Activity:
Students will create a picture of the life cycle of a bee using different pasta's. Students will glue on a grain of rice to represent the egg, a spiral noodle for the Larva, a shell pasta for the Pupa and bow tie pasta to represent an adult bee.
