- - - - Koro's rigid, patriarchal beliefs about the next tribe successor conjures his internal conflict when his duty to uphold Maori tradition by finding the next male successor evidently clashes with Kahu's competence as a leader. Koro overtly declares “I will have nothing to do with her, she has broken the male line of descent in our tribe.” Koro’s arrogant tone unequivocally shows his ardent rejection, as exemplified by the verb “broken” that implies Kahu’s birth seems harmful as a descendant of the Maori tribe. That being said, when Kahu’s spiritual connection demonstrates leadership in establishing the "oneness" with nature, Koro later reconsiders through the declarative statement “She’s the one. She’s the one I’ve been waiting for.” The repetition of “the one” suggests that Kahu’s fate is not meant to be constrained by the patriarchal society. That is, Koro realises that personal desire supersedes duty where Kahu's capability waives the traditional gender requirement.

        Marquez critiques the dark side of Latin American masculinity. The societal pressures forced them to adhere to the machismo identity, as they felt socially obligated to kill SN to restore their family honour or to avenge Angela. The phrase “dragged him off almost by force” suggests the burden of responsibility the brothers have to carry; otherwise, they will deem themselves not to be “masculine” or adhere to the values of society.
      - Vicario twins conflict between societal expectations of defending family honour vs their hesitance to commit the murder. Specifically, Pablo publicly claims “We’re going to kill Santiago Nasar” while carrying their knives around the town. The declarative, high modality verb of “going to ” depicts the obedience of the twin brother to restore their tarnished family honor. Making this statement also reveals the reluctance of the twin brothers whereby Machismo culture dictates that failure to murder Santiago would result in cowardice and loss of dignity.
- - - - Male characters in the text are being portrayed with extra responsibilities. For instance, Koro exhibits a serious and solemn leadership demeanor where he puts extra work for male kids to reach the chief’s position, even though the children were not eager to fight for the chief. For females, especially Kahu, Koro doesn't think she is qualified for the title Chief solely because of gender. Evidently from the quote “Which of the boys?” he gasped in grief. “Which of the—” This appears in the end of the novel where Koro finally acknowledges that Kahu is the Whale Rider, but he still compared Kahu with the boys because with his rigid gender believes he expected males to be the ones having the most responsibility in the tribe.

        Angela Vicario is forced to conform to the ideal of female purity, despite her personal and emotional feelings regarding her relationship with Bayardo San Roman. She is forced into marrying him because she cannot refuse marriage in the face of wealth and power. Thus, Marquez presents her as a female character that lacks autonomy and empowerment. This ideal contrasts with Angela's personal desire, as the narrator describes that "It was Angela Vicario who didn't want to marry him". Thus, Marquez exposes the struggle of expressing personal identity in the face of societal gendered norms.
