Differences: In WR, Ihimaera focuses more on male gender roles and leadership, excluding women from becoming the next tribe leader due to the traditional duty men have to uphold Maori culture. On the other hand, Chronicle focuses on female gender roles, particularly the expectation of social obligation and submissiveness. The novels also differ in the outcome of internal conflict, where in WR, Ihimaera ends the story with acceptance and transformation as Koro finally acknowledges and accepts Kahu's worth. Contrastingly, Chronicle ends with a tragedy where Angela's autonomy remains suppressed, as she faces the societal pressures and obligation to marry Bayardo. Despite her eventual love for Bayardo, she is still a victim of societal expectations due to the society of that time.
