Describe the Synapse Structure, Function, and Processes that Occur at the Synapse
A synapse is the junction where communication occurs: Between two neurons, or Between a neuron and an effector cell (muscle or gland).
Process: Action potential arrives at presynaptic terminal, voltage-gated Ca²⁺ channels open and enters the axon terminal, vesicles fuse with the presynaptic membrane releasing neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft, it will bind to receptors on postsynaptic membrane opening ion channels. Postsynaptic potential generated and neurotransmitters removed by reuptake, enzyme breakdown, or diffusion
