Why 3 days?
It increases the likelihood of detecting the cysts, which can be intermittently shed and may not be present in every stool sample.

The infectious form, the trophozoite, attaches to the brush border of the small intestinal mucosa, where it absorbs nutrients and then multiplies through binary fission
As the trophozoites transit through the intestines, they transform into cysts in the large intestine, which are then passed in faeces.
cysts are immediately infective, posing a risk of transmission via the faecal oral route

Recurrent infections are often with Giardia so you may have owners becoming frustrated that the medications are not clearing the infection! It is important to educate about the environmental risks i.e. clean up your dog's faeces!
