Types of sleep
Symmetrical Sleep → both hemispheres rest equally
Asymmetrical Sleep
One hemisphere deeper asleep than the other
🐬 Unihemispheric Sleep → one hemisphere awake
Used by: dolphins, fur seals, mallard ducks, frigatebirds, and even humans (first night effect)
Examples of Asymmetrical Sleep in Animals
Dolphins: stay alert while swimming and breathing
Fur seals: float with one eye open to avoid predators
Birds: keep outer eye open for threats
Humans: experience partial wakefulness in new environments
Sleep Disorders
Insomnia
Caused by stress, anxiety, pain, or environment
Triggers hyperarousal → high cortisol + fast heartbeat
Reduces sleep quality and causes exhaustion
Can become chronic, linked to anxiety or depression
Treatment & Good Sleep Practices:
• Keep a dark, cool room
• Use bed only for sleep
• Maintain consistent sleep schedule
• Avoid bright lights at night
• Relaxing habits (reading, meditating)
