William McKinley (1896-1901)
McKinely was the President during the Spanish American War. He wanted to force Spain end fighting in Cuba which led to the war.
America was closer to Cuba than Spain since Cuba wanted to get freedom.
Wanted the Philippines as a stepping stone to China.
Philippines realized later and rebelled against America.
Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1908)
Gentlemen's Agreement was both Japan and America agreed.
America wanted Panama Canal for getting through the Caribbean Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. And helped Panama rebel against Colombia.
Woodrow Wilson (1913-1920)
Wilson signed the Jones Shafroth Act which gave Puerto Ricans more rights but it wasn't as much as Americans.
Protected Haiti from Germany and France and America had rights to control after.
Wilson wanted to get the Mexican port of Veracruz. Had good relations at first but later went to bad relations from troops attacking America.
William Howard Taft (1909-1912)
Continued the Open Door Policy to get equal opportunities with other countries wanting China.
Taft himself wanted America to get more trade routes and expand it even more after Roosevelt.
Foraker Act officially chose America to have a government in Puerto Rico.
