Adolescence: The Science of Becoming Me
Identity Formation
Erikson said that adolescence is a critical period for developing a personal identity. Being unable to establish a clear sense of self during this stage can lead to confusion about your path in life. Marcia identified four identity statuses based on exploration and commitment. Teens may commit without exploring, explore without committing, do neither, or explore and then commit.
Identity Diffusion – “I don’t know what I want to be yet.”
Foreclosure – “I’m going to be a lawyer because my family expects it.”
Moratorium – “I’m exploring different options to see what fits me.”
Identity Achievement– “I’ve figured out what I want to do and why.”
Brain Development
Myelination is the process where fatty substances called myelins form layers around neurons, enhancing the speed of the nervous system
Synaptic Pruning is a natural process in brain development where extra synapses are eliminated, making neural connection more efficient
Prefrontal Cortex is the front part of the brain's frontal lobe, used for decision making and self control.
Reward System is the brain’s way of encouraging behaviors that bring pleasure and motivation.
Emerging adulthood
Emerging Adulthood is the phase from ages 18–25 where young adults explore identity and life paths.
Identity Exploration: Trying out careers, beliefs, and relationships.
Instability: Frequent changes in jobs, housing, and goals.
Digital Overload: Constant online pressure can cause stress and distraction.
Connections to me
.
Instability: Life changes a lot: jobs, homes, relationships. My neighbor moved three times in two years after high school, trying to find the right place to live and work.
Identity Exploration: Young adults try different paths in school or work. My cousin started college as a business major but switched to nursing after realizing she wanted to help people more directly.
