Animals and creatures that help us
Natural science
Pollination and food production
Key Concept:
Bees and butterflies help plants make fruit and seeds; they are important for crops. (DBE, 2011)
• Activity (inquiry-based): Pollination observation & prediction — show short video of bees on flowers, then learners predict which flowers will produce fruit. Use flower pictures and a simple recording sheet (count visits in a video clip). (Maseko,2022)
• Science process skills: observing, recording, predicting.
• Values: care for biodiversity, responsibility.
• Short assessment: learners draw a pollination sequence and write 1 sentence.
Soil health — earthworms and decomposition
• Key concept: Earthworms aerate soil, break down organic matter and improve plant growth. (DBE, 2011)
• Activity (inquiry-based): Soil jars comparison — two jars (one with earthworms + compost, one without). Over 1 week learners observe changes and record. (Maseko, 2022)
• Science process skills: observing, comparing, classifying.
• Values: stewardship of soil, respect for living things.
• Short assessment: present findings orally; label earthworm role.
Social Science
People who work with animals (occupations & community roles)
•Key concept: Working animals (guide dogs, farm animals) support livelihoods and well-being. (DBE, 2011; Peterson, 2020)
• Activity (inquiry-based): Community connections map — learners interview (in class or via video) a person who works with animals (farmer, vet, guide-dog trainer) and list community uses.
• Skills: communication, mapping social roles, empathy.
• Values: respect, inclusivity.
• Assessment idea: short role-play showing how a guide dog helps a person.
Local food systems and culture
• Key concept: Animals provide food (milk, eggs, honey) and are part of local economies and traditions. (Van der Walt, 2019)
• Activity (inquiry-based): Food origin chain — learners trace food from farm to table for milk/honey and create a simple poster.
• Skills: sequencing, information summarising.
• Values: appreciation for labour and food.
• Assessment idea: group poster presentation.
Technology
Tools that help animals help people
• Key concept: Harnesses, blindfolds, milking equipment, compost bins — simple technologies that work with animals. (Smith & Daniels, 2019)
• Activity (inquiry-based): Design a tool — learners sketch a simple tool that helps a working animal (e.g., a lightweight harness). Teacher models drawing and simple evaluation.
• Tech process skills: designing, making a model, testing.
• Values: problem-solving, creativity.
• Assessment: checklist for design and materials used.
Using technology to learn about animals
• Key concept: Videos, magnifiers, simple data charts help us observe and record animal behaviour. (Smith & Daniels, 2019)
• Activity (inquiry-based): Video investigation — learners watch a short clip (bees or guide dog) and make a three-point observation list and one question to investigate further.
• Skills: using digital media, recording observations.
• Values: responsible use of technology.
• Assessment: learners submit an observation sheet.
