        Tonicity: Ability of a surrounding solution to cause a cell to gain or lose water
        
        Isotonic: Solute concentration
        
        Osmoregulation: Control of solutes and water balance
        
        Plant cells become flaccid when in an isotonic solution since there is a no net movement
        
        Hypotonic: Solute concentration is less than inside the cell
        
        Hypertonic: Solute concetration is greater than inside the cell
        
        Plasmolysis: Cells lose water in hypertonic environment causing the cell to shrivel up
      - Active transport: Requires energy, usually ATP hydrolysis to move substance against their concentration gradient
