Key Concept:
Smart collars on cows track their health and behavior, helping farmers take better care of them (Lamanna, Bovo & Cavallini, 2025:1).
Activity:
Show short videos and images of cows wearing smart collars. Learners guess what each sensor does and discuss how it helps both humans and animals.
Tools and devices that help animals help us
Activity:
Learners draw or craft their own guide dog harness on paper or with craft materials. They label the parts and explain how each part helps the dog guide safely.
Key Concept:
Learners explore guide dog harnesses to discover how the design helps dogs support people, encouraging active engagement and discovery (Boynton, 2018:6; Naudé & Meier, 2025).
Natural Science
Animals that give us food
Key Concept:
Bees make honey and help pollinate plants, which gives us food (WCED, 2011:54-55; Ypsilibrary, 2020; DBE, 2011:57).
Activity:
Learners look at pictures of bees and honeycombs. They discuss how honey is made and why pollination is important for our food.
Animals that give us materials
Key Concept:
Sheep give us wool, which we use to make clothes and other useful things (WCED, 2011:60-61; DBE, 2011:57).
Activity:
Learners touch wool samples or look at pictures of wool products. They sort items into “food” or “materials” and talk about why wool is helpful.
Social Science
Animals that work for us
Key Concept:
Dogs help blind people get around safely, showing how animals can help humans in daily life (Boynton, 2018:4-7; DBE, 2011:57).
Activity:
Learners listen to a short story about a guide dog. Then they retell the story to the friend next to them and discuss what the dog did and why it was important.
Stories of helpful animals
Key Concept:
Donkeys carry heavy loads for humans, showing how animals can help with work and everyday life (WCED, 2011:64; DBE, 2011:57).
Activity:
Learners look at pictures of donkeys carrying loads. Then they draw a picture showing a task being done with a donkey and the same task without one, and discuss their drawings in small groups.
