In the mountain
Mountains
How do they form
Tectonic activity: When Earth's plates collide, they push land upward, forming mountains (e.g., the Himalayas).
Fun Fact
The tallest mountain in the world is Mount Everest, but if you measure from base to peak, Mauna Kea in Hawaii is actually taller
What is it
A mountain is a large natural elevation of the Earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding land.
Ice and snow
What does it turns
If it gets even warmer, that water can evaporate into water vapor (a gas).
In cold conditions, water vapor can freeze directly into ice again—this is called deposition.
When it warms up, snow and ice melt into liquid water.
Fun Fact
Snow isn’t actually white—it’s colorless! It looks white because the ice crystals reflect all wavelengths of light equally, creating that snowy glow.

Summer sports
-
Fun Fact
Mountain biking was invented in the 1970s in California, but now it’s one of the most popular summer sports in alpine regions worldwide. Some ski resorts turn into bike parks in summer!
When we could play it
Summer sports in the mountains include hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and paragliding. These are best enjoyed during:May to September, when the weather is warmer and trails are clear. In cooler mountain regions, summer sports may start later (June) and end earlier (August)
Be careful!
Causes when not careful
Without warm clothing, sturdy boots, or helmets, you're more likely to suffer injuries or exposure. Sudden storms, fog, or snow can catch you off guard and lead to hypothermia or getting lost.
Fun Fact
At high altitudes, water boils at a lower temperature—around 90°C instead of 100°C. That means cooking takes longer, and dehydration can happen faster. Always drink plenty of water and watch for altitude sickness!
What phenomenon or risk
Getting Lost: Trails can be confusing, especially in fog or snow. Always carry a map or GPS. Avalanches: Sudden snow slides triggered by weather, movement, or unstable snow layers. They can be deadly and unpredictable
Winter sports
-
Fun Fact
The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France in 1924—and ski jumping was one of the original events. Today, snowboarding and freestyle skiing are fan favorites!
When we could play it
Winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and snowshoeing are best played during the cold season, typically:December to February in most northern hemisphere countries. In high-altitude areas, the season can extend from late November to early April
